Scrap Metal Scam in Duluth
Due to raised prices in scrap metal, criminals are stealing cars and selling them as junk to earn a quick dollar in Duluth.
Tow trunk companies are at fault for cooperating with the criminals by buying their vehicles without ownership documentation for the supposed “junk” vehicles.
There are a few investigations going on to help close this scrap metal scam case, and officials are calling for more restrictive laws when it comes to buying and selling junk vehicles.
Currently, the only documentation that is needed to sell a junk car in Duluth is a license, but investigators are wondering if the licenses that were given are even legal.
Whereas only the license is needed in Duluth, in New York it is required that the car seller provide the title for the vehicle. If the title is not in possession, the registration and the copy of the registered driver’s drivers license is required. If this sort of paper work is not provided, the vehicle is not picked up.
